Merilba Estate Winery Sign

MERILBA ESTATE is a family run business near Uralla, New South Wales where they grow the grapes, make and bottle the wine, and market it. Theirs is a cool climate vineyard which produces Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Gewurtraminer.

The winery kept its name from the original property that was established since the mid 1800's. John and Annette Cassidy acquired it in 1982 and have been running a South Devon stud as well as Merino fine wool and lambs, commercial cattle, Boar goats and more recently, the winery itself. The property also boasts beautiful large gardens, including the Walk of Roses where visitors can admire dozens of different varieties of climbing roses.

The eleven hectare vineyard at Merilba was planted in 1998. Here John, together with Shaun Cassidy, the winemaker, worked hard to create a state of the art winery and, since 2010, a first class Cellar Door which is housed in an authentic 150 year old building. This was originally a stable for the coach line and then, for the next hundred years, a shearing shed. Large areas of the walls are corrugated copper which give a warm aura, and large open fireplace makes it especially welcoming in the winter. Cyprus pine rafters and floor to ceiling windows from which you can see views of the mountain ranges and open spaces add to the experience. You can even play a game of chess on the giant chess board!

Merilba had a sandstone entry wall engraved with their name, but they needed still more to draw customers into the cellar door. So they called on Danthonia to create a simple but elegant branding sign that could be placed outside during the day and taken indoors at close of business. We hand carved and gilded the winery logo and mounted it on a sturdy frame.
